Panorama of guests on the Greenland Ice Sheet

Greenland Ice Sheet

Greenland is home to the second-largest ice sheet in the world behind Antarctica. And, thanks to a 38km gravel road, by far the easiest way to visit it is on a tour from Kangerlussuaq.

Day Tours to the Greenland Ice Sheet

All trips to the Ice Sheet start off with a somewhat bumpy journey along the “Ice Road”.  Visitors should keep a sharp eye out for reindeer (caribou), musk oxen, arctic hare, arctic foxes, and different bird species as they journey along the road and learn a little about the history of the area from the guide.

The road ends at Point 660, so named because it stands 660 metres above sea level. From there, it is a short hike over the moraine field to reach the vast expanse of ice that stretches as far as the eye can see. Guests have the option of a short stay at the edge of the ice before heading back to Kangerlussuaq, or a full-day ice-cap adventure where crampons allow a more complete exploration of the glacial features of this icy world.

Guests also have the option of exploring the Ice Sheet from the air on a low-flying scenic flight.

Camp Ice Camp

For the truly adventurous, the ultimate experience is to spend a night camped on the ice sheet at Camp Ice Cap. Imagine yourself as an Arctic explorer as you help transport equipment to the camp on pulks, set up and pull down camp, and journey over even more of the Ice Sheet with your fellow explorers.
